Carjacking Suspect Wounded Near San Francisco Airport After Allegedly Yelling 'Shoot Me' at Cops

A carjacking suspect was shot by a San Francisco police officer early Sunday morning after the man allegedly approached the cop and said, "Shoot me, shoot me, shoot me," according to San Francisco police officials.

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr addressed reporters from the San Francisco International Airport, near where the incident occurred at around 7:30am local time. Suhr said the unnamed suspect was in serious but stable condition after being shot in the abdomen.

The incident reportedly started when the suspect crashed a stolen car into a light pole at the airport, ran from police, and then attempted to carjack another vehicle at a stoplight. When the driver refused to leave, the suspect ran across nearby Highway 101 and hid in some bushes. The responding officers heard "clanking" and were able to find him.

"The officer at gunpoint orders the suspect to stop, the suspect turns his attention to the officer, begins to come at the officer," said Suhr. He said the officer told the suspect to stop before firing a first shot that missed. "One of the other officers can hear the suspect saying 'Shoot me, shoot me, shoot me.'"

Suhr said the suspect was taken into custody after being hit by the officer's second gunshot. The suspect is believed to have been unarmed, but he had a backpack in his left hand and his other hand was "obscured," Suhr said.

No one except the suspect was injured, and the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave, pending an investigation, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Operations at the San Francisco airport were not affected by the incident.
