At least one person was killed and more than 20 people were wounded after four bombs planted by suspected Muslim insurgents exploded Sunday in Yala, Thailand.

The bombs exploded simultaneously in the southern Thai city shortly before 4 PM in four different locations — in front of furniture shop, an ATM, a Fa Sai shop and at the entrance of Muang Mai Market, according to witnesses and local media.

The southern Thai town of Yala was hit by four bombs in close succession on April 6.

"One of the devices was hidden in a car which was stolen a long time ago. The car had also been used for several robberies," Col Pramote Prom-in, spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command’s southern office told the Bangkok Post.

One of the explosions ignited a fire that spread to nearby homes.

The injured were taken to Yala Gala General hospital.

Yala is one of three Thai provinces where Muslims are the majority and where many civilians have been caught in a war between rebels and troops.

Since an Islamic insurgency emerged in 2004, more than 5,000 people have been killed in country's three southern provinces, The Associated Press reported.
