With 42 dead and even more still missing, the wildfires that broke out in Northern California earlier this month are some of the deadliest in the state’s history. Sonoma County was especially hard-hit, with 23 deaths reported there. At least 15,000 people had been evacuated as of Thursday, with crews reporting progress containing the fires.The wildfires have destroyed almost 7,000 homes, and according to California’s State Insurance Commissioner, they’ve have left over $1 billion in damages. But that’s only so far: He expects that number to rise “dramatically,” and the risk modeling firm RMS predicts the damages will be somewhere between $3 billion and $6 billion.Gov.
