Houston’s own “Deadpool” has been helping Harvey victims

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, most of the heroes aren't wearing costumes. But some are.

Among the many volunteers coordinating relief efforts for victims of the deadly Hurricane Harvey, one that a VICE News crew met in Houston rides his motorcycle through the flooded city in full Deadpool attire. He even legally changed his name to “Deadpool Gambino.”

Gambino, who formerly served in the Army and was deployed to Iraq twice, uses the Houston Cosplay Facebook page he operates to organize fellow enthusiasts to come to the George R. Brown Convention Center, one of the main shelters now housing Harvey evacuees. There, several dozen cosplay enthusiasts, many dressed as princesses, distribute small toys to children and pose for pictures to raise Harvey victims’ spirits.

“They just got their homes ruined, and probably a lot of their stuff was lost, if not all of it. And they have a smile on their face,” Gambino said. “That’s what it’s about.”
