Trump is hijacking the "Dreamer" message with a $50 trucker hat

Dare to dream.

In America, you, too, can dare to dream to one day own a $50 trucker hat.

During his State of the Union address last month, President Donald Trump said his supporters were just as deserving of the title “Dreamers” as people protected under DACA, the Obama-era program that protects immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Now he’s turning that sentiment into a branding opportunity, hawking “Dreamer” trucker hats to his supporters to raise money for his re-election.

For the not-so-low price of $50, you can get your hands on an “American Dreamer” hat from Trump’s official re-election website. “Because Americans are dreamers too,” reads a product description on the site.

The hat is obviously alluding to the hundreds of thousands of so-called “Dreamers” protected under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. The Trump administration has used DACA as a bargaining chip in an attempt to accomplish some of its more controversial goals, such as building a border wall and restricting legal immigration.

On Monday, the Supreme Court declined to hear a case on DACA, saying an appeals court should hear it first. Trump promised to end DACA if Congress could not come up with a bipartisan law to replace it within six months, a deadline that passes next week. For now, DACA will remain in place.

Although Trump is the one trying to end DACA, he has repeatedly attempted to blame Democrats who fail to negotiate with him for its uncertain future.

Trump also cautioned Republicans against referring to DACA recipients as Dreamers.

“Some people call it Dreamers,” Trump said earlier this month. “It's not Dreamers. Don’t fall into that trap. It’s much different than dreamers.”
