The funeral for an Indian man shot in Kansas City became a protest against Trump

This segment originally aired Feb. 28, 2017, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

Srinivas Kuchibhotla, who was shot and killed in Kansas last week in an apparent hate crime, was just buried in Hyderabad, India in a funeral that turned into an anti-Trump protest.

Adam Purinton has been charged with the killing of Kuchibhotla and wounding two other men. A witness claims that Purinton admitted to shooting what he thought were Iranian people, saying he yelled “get out of my country” at the two Indian men before he opened fire, and other witnesses have said Purinton thought he was shooting “Iranian people.” The FBI is investigating the shooting as a hate crime and the White House has condemned the attack.

Sunaina Dumala, Kuchibhotla’s widow, returned to India with the body but was too upset to attend the funeral. During an earlier press conference, she said, “I was always concerned, are we doing the right thing staying in the United States of America, but he always assured me that only good things happen to good people.” Dumala says minorities don’t feel safe in America and wants reassurances from the US government that it is taking action. She has not yet made a decision whether or not to return to the United States.

VICE News Correspondent Hind Hassan reports from Hyderabad where many see the shooting as a result of the climate of intolerance created by Trump’s America-first policies. Protesters at the funeral carried signs calling the killing a hate crime and condemning Donald Trump for his divisive rhetoric on immigration, which they say has emboldened racists.
