The owner of Britain’s largest pub chain is very excited about Brexit

Tim Martin speaks about the UK's future outside the EU and the importance of democracy after Brexit.

Unlike many other British business owners, Tim Martin is a vocal supporter of Brexit. The founder of J D Wetherspoon, the U.K.’s largest independent pub chain, Martin actually broadcast his opinion on coasters in his restaurants in the lead-up to the Brexit referendum, urging patrons to vote for leaving the EU.

VICE News correspondent Hind Hassan met with Martin to discuss his belief that the EU has become increasingly less democratic, and that by leaving, the U.K will regain power it had lost to rule itself democratically. Martin says this will result in economic benefits for the country.

However, he doesn’t share every political belief with the average Brexiteer: He supports immigration, saying that those who arrived in the country legally before Brexit should be allowed to stay, and that immigration should continue.

“It’s a benefit to the country,” Martin said. “It has to be controlled, though, by our own government.”
