Chicago cops face reprimand for their #taketheknee Instagram

Two Chicago police officers are in hot water after a photo surfaced online of them “taking the knee” with raised fists on Sunday, the same day NFL players, coaches, and owners showed support for free speech by bending down on one knee before football games.

The Chicago Police Department wrote in a statement to VICE News that they were aware of the photo, which was posted Monday by activist Aleta Clark, 28, who goes by “EnglewoodBarbie” on Instagram.

“We will address it in the same way we have handled previous incidents in which officers have made political statements in uniform, with a reprimand and a reminder of department policies,” the statement read.

In the photo’s caption, Clark said she walked into a police station and asked police officers of color if they were “against Police Brutality and Racism.” She also wrote that she asked the officers whether they supported Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback whose decision to protest racial justice during the national anthem in 2016 triggered a national movement among American pro athletes, and is suspected as the reason he hasn’t been signed by a team for the 2017 season.

President Trump enflamed the issue Friday during a rally in Alabama when he said NFL owners should “get that son of a bitch off the field” and fire him for taking a knee during the national anthem. In response, over 200 NFL players took a knee before kickoff on Sunday.

On Monday, the entire Dallas Cowboys team and owner Jerry Jones took a knee with arms linked before standing for the national anthem.

That prompted Trump to run with his condemnation of NFL players Tuesday morning:
