Greek farmers face off with Athens riot police over tax reforms

Greek farmers clashed with police in the streets of Athens on Wednesday during a tax reforms protest. Nearly 1,300 farmers hailing from the island of Crete had marched into the capital to call out tax increases and pension cuts imposed to try to stabilize the flailing economy. The demonstration turned violent outside the agricultural ministry, where police had blocked all access.

Most Greeks are reeling from harsh budget cuts imposed under three international bailouts. Greece’s spiraling economy has led to spikes in unemployment, poverty, and suicides.
