ISIS takes credit for TV station attack in Kabul

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on the Shamshad TV station in Kabul on Tuesday. The attack left at least one station employee dead and dozens more wounded.

The attack began when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the front gate while at least one other gunman fired from inside the compound. The siege lasted for about an hour, with Afghan security forces eventually blowing a hole in the compound wall to subdue the attackers.

The station, which broadcasts news and current affairs in the Pashto language, is now back on the air.

Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists: Thirteen were killed in 2016 according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

The Islamic State group was responsible for killing six people at a TV station in Jalalabad in May.
