People are zapping their brains with electricity hoping to enhance creativity and intelligence

Scientists and DIY technologists are zapping their brain with low doses of electricity for benefits they say include anxiety and depression relief and enhanced creativity and intelligence.

The process, Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (TDCS), consists of electrodes attached by wires to a nine volt battery which sends a low-power electrical current into target parts of the brain.

One consumer device called the Halo Sport is marketed to professional athletes, including some Golden State Warriors. Developers believe Halo puts the brain in a state of “hyperplasticity” where your brain is more receptive to practice leading to improvements in muscle memory, strength, explosiveness, and endurance.

VICE News’ Elle Reeve visits the lab at City College of New York where researcher Marom Bikson is studying different types of TDCS technology — including the Halo.
