Some UN peacekeepers are leaving behind a legacy of sexual abuse

Allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation have cast a shadow over U.N. peacekeepers’ mandate: to protect. The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of 10 countries where at least 105 cases of abuse were reported this year.

Although the U.N. has a zero tolerance policy towards abuse, the power of prosecution rests with the peacekeeper’s country of origin. The legal process to seek justice for sexual assault survivors is often criticized for its lack of transparency and follow-through.
