The Treasury secretary's wife ranted on Instagram about being rich

Louise Linton, wife of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, could use a filter for more than her photos on Instagram. The Scottish actress, who has a well-documented taste for designer fashion, responded with disdain to a critic who commented on one of her Instagram posts Monday evening.

Linton posted an image of herself disembarking from a government jet, captioning the photo “Great #daytrip to #Kentucky! #nicest #people #beautiful #countryside #rolandmouret pants #tomford sunnies, #hermesscarf #valentinorockstudheels #valentino,” and capping it off with a “#usa” for good measure.

Linton’s mention of the various designer brands she was wearing en route to Kentucky, where nearly a fifth of people live below the poverty line, apparently irked Instagram user jennimiller29, who responded “Glad we could pay for your little getaway. #deplorable.”

To Jenni Miller’s surprise, she got a lengthy response from Linton. “Do you think the US govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! Lololol. Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country?” Linton wrote in a comment on her profile, which was public at the time.

Miller is a mother of three from Portland, Oregon, according to the New York Times.

“You’re adorably out of touch,” Linton continued, followed by a heart-eyed emoji. “Your kids look very cute. Your life looks cute.”

Shortly after the exchange, which went viral on Twitter, Linton made her profile private. She had roughly 8,060 followers.

She and her husband were in Kentucky on a trip with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who hails from that state. A Treasury Department official told the New York Times that the Mnuchins paid the government back for the trip and that Linton didn’t get compensated by any of the labels she promoted in her hashtags.

Linton married Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs exec, in June at a ceremony attended by Wall Street tycoons, President Donald Trump and most of his Cabinet, with Vice President Mike Pence officiating. Linton posed for a Town & Country spread showcasing the jewels she’d be wearing during the ceremony.

Update 8/22 5:11 p.m. ET: Linton apologized.
