The UN is sending monitors to watch over besieged Aleppo

Following a unanimous vote in the U.N. Security Council on Monday, U.N. staff will be deployed to eastern Aleppo to monitor the evacuation process, which has been marred by delays and sporadic violence.

Evacuations resumed Monday, and it’s reported that as many as 50,000 civilians remain in the city recently captured by the Syrian government.

Though the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Red Crescent have been present in eastern Aleppo, deploying U.N. monitors will mean that the status and conditions of the evacuation process can be reported directly to the Security Council.
