A Venezuelan taxi driver explains why he joined the opposition against President Nicolás Maduro

This Venezuelan taxi driver explains why he joined the opposition against Maduro

Venezuela opposition activists are still protesting in Caracas, refusing to leave until President Nicolás Maduro leaves office. The opposition declared Maduro a dictator after the government blocked attempts to oust him by referendum and delayed elections at the state and municipal levels.

Though government forces have responded to the unarmed protestors with tear gas and live ammunition, the wave of anti-Maduro protests shows no sign of abating even as the violence escalates. Twenty-four people have thus far been killed in three weeks of protests.

Since Maduro took office in 2013, hyperinflation, dire food shortages, and unchecked violence have put an already sputtering country on the verge of total collapse. Today, Venezuelans feel like they have nothing left to lose. VICE News follows a taxi driver who has recently taken up the fight after he lost his job.

This segment originally aired April 19, 2017, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.
