Watch a Trumpcare mastermind face a bunch of his angry constituents

Hours before Rep. Tom MacArthur’s town hall began on Wednesday, protestors had already gathered.

MacArthur, a Republican representing New Jersey’s 3rd District, has been instrumental in his party’s plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. Rather than accept defeat after the first version of the bill failed to go to a vote, MacArthur, the co-chair of the moderate Republican “Tuesday Group,” introduced an amendment that paved the way for the American Health Care Act to pass the House.

MacArthur’s amendment included provisions popular among more conservative factions of the Republican Party, like allowing states to seek waivers for the requirement to cover pre-existing conditions and rolling back other insurance market reforms. Despite assurances from some House Republicans, many analysts and medical groups say those policies would jeopardize affordable coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. And if the bill becomes law, the Congressional Budget Office puts the total number of insured at 24 million.

MacArthur is holding Wednesday’s town hall meeting in Willingboro, New Jersey — a liberal stronghold in his district. The invitation notes that neither signs nor bags will be permitted in the venue, and security will be tight.
