WATCH LIVE: Women Unshackled conference addresses women in U.S. prisons

Although men still outnumber women behind bars, the rate of female imprisonment has outpaced that of men by more than 50 percent over the last three decades.

Hosted by the Justice Action Network and the Brennan Center for Justice, the Women Unshackled conference on Tuesday aims to address the problems facing the hundreds of thousands of women in U.S. jails and prisons.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle — including Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker and Republican Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin – will be taking part in the day of discussions, which event organizers say will address “the unique challenges women face in the [criminal justice] system and the policy solutions to improve outcomes.”
