Woman says George H.W. Bush groped her when she was 16

A sixth woman has accused George H.W. Bush of groping her.

Roslyn Corrigan told Time that the former president grabbed her butt without permission during a photo op in 2003, when she was 16 and he was 79. Bush, who had already left office, was visiting a meeting of CIA officers in Texas, including Corrigan’s father.

“My initial action was absolute horror. I was really, really confused,” Corrigan told Time. “The first thing I did was look at my mom and, while he was still standing there, I didn’t say anything. What does a teenager say to the ex-president of the United States? Like, ‘Hey, dude, you shouldn’t have touched me like that?’”

In the wake of more than 100 woman accusing Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment or assault, a number of women have publicly accused Bush of groping them during photo ops, incidents which Bush’s spokesperson attributed to the fact that the ex-president’s arms usually rest near people’s waists because he uses a wheelchair.

To break the ice, Bush would reportedly make a joke about liking a magician named “David Cop-a-Feel” and give his neighbor’s butt a squeeze.

Corrigan’s account didn’t mention the joke, but it also contains a more notable difference from other allegations: When she met Bush, he wasn’t using a wheelchair yet.

“George Bush simply does not have it in his heart to knowingly cause anyone harm or distress, and he again apologizes to anyone he may have offended during a photo op,” a Bush spokesperson told Time in relation to Corrigan’s accusation.

This response echoes Bush’s reaction to other accusations, which his camp has framed as unintended responses to good-mannered joking, not harassment.
